⚙️ Product Development

The enthusiasm and professionalism of Co-Lab has made working on the Pneumonitor project with them an easy and a rewarding experience. They kept us informed of progress and problems and communicated the complexities in an easy-to-understand way. They were open to our questions and were great at getting us to explain and gain understanding what the Pneumonitor needed from an on-farm perspective.
This was a collaborative project that took our idea, developed the engineering together, to produce a farmer friendly sensor that will help anyone rearing calves to prevent pneumonia.

Challenges

Pneumonia’s Impact on EU Dairy Farmers: High Costs and Calf Mortality

Pneumonia affects dairy farmers annually, causing calf mortality and reduced productivity, costing the EU dairy sector up to £400 million each year.

Solution

Pneumonia’s Impact on EU Dairy Farmers: High Costs and Calf Mortality

PneuMonitor is a rugged, compact, standalone environmental monitoring solution that provides actionable insights and alerts, warning farmers when conditions become hazardous.

Process

Development process steps

The development process begins with Requirements Capture, where project needs are documented. This leads to Schematic Capture, creating the initial circuit design. Next, PCB Layout defines the physical board layout, followed by 3D Model creation for visualization. The process then moves to Deployment, where the design is implemented, followed by Machining & Assembly to build the hardware. Finally, the Printed Circuit Board is produced, completing the development cycle.

Benefits

Early Alerts, Healthier Herds, and Boosted Productivity

Early Warning System - Alerts farmers when environmental conditions become hazardous.

Reduced Calf Mortality - Helps promote the hygiene factors which impact herd health.

Increased Productivity - Minimises illness-related setbacks, ensuring better growth rates and higher milk yields.
