Remote Technologies Group Benefits & Impact Toolkit

Overview
Sellafield Ltd’s Remote Technologies Group required a clear and structured communication toolkit to demonstrate the value of remote access technologies across high-hazard nuclear environments.
RTG operates across air, land and water, covering:

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Remotely Operated Vehicles

Robotics
The group supports safer, faster and cheaper delivery through:
-
Strategic leadership
-
Technical support
-
Turnkey service delivery
-
Remote inspections and characterisation
-
Reduced personnel exposure in hazardous areas
-
Faster operational decision-making
To support this, we developed a connected suite of visual and strategic materials designed to help RTG communicate its impact more consistently and support future investment conversations.
The Challenge
The main challenge was not simply designing individual documents, but creating a clear system for explaining RTG’s value across a wide range of technologies, services and operational scenarios.
At the start of the project:
-
RTG’s benefits were spread across multiple projects and use cases
-
UAV, ROV and Robotics activities needed to be presented under one consistent structure
-
Technical information needed to be simplified for wider stakeholder understanding
-
Benefits needed to be linked to measurable outcomes
-
Case studies needed a consistent format and visual language
-
The team needed a clearer way to show both realised and in-flight benefits
-
The final outputs had to work as standalone documents and as a connected toolkit
The project also needed to balance technical accuracy with strong visual communication, making complex nuclear decommissioning benefits easier to understand at a glance.
Our Approach
We adopted a structured information design approach focused on clarity, consistency and usability.
The first step was to define a clear communication framework around RTG’s three core capability areas:
-
UAV — aerial inspections, live monitoring, urgent deployments and data capture
-
ROV — ground-based and underwater remote access, inspection, characterisation and sample collection
-
Robotics — fixed robotic systems used for material handling, servicing and housekeeping
We then translated RTG’s benefits into a repeatable structure:
Cost Saving
Time Saving
Risk Reduction
Cost Avoidance
Time Avoidance

The Solution
The final output was a connected RTG Benefits & Impact toolkit designed to communicate the group’s value clearly, consistently and visually.
The solution included:
A structured benefits framework to define and measure impact
A dashboard concept to visualise realised and in-flight benefits
A service catalogue to explain RTG’s capabilities and offer
A case study library to evidence real-world outcomes
A technical paper to support deeper understanding and decision-making
An infographic and summary sheet to provide quick, accessible entry points into the toolkit
Key Deliverables
The key deliverables were designed as a connected suite of materials, each serving a specific role within the wider RTG Benefits & Impact toolkit.
Together, they helped explain RTG’s capabilities, evidence measurable value, and make complex technical information easier for stakeholders to understand.
Benefits dashboard
& register
A visual dashboard for tracking realised and in-flight benefits across UAV, ROV and Robotics.
It provided a clear view of tactical and programme-level benefits, helping stakeholders quickly understand RTG’s cumulative impact.

Service brochure
A clear overview of RTG’s capabilities, services, equipment and use cases across air, land, water and robotics.
It helped explain what RTG offers and how different teams could engage with the group.

Case Study Library
A set of project deep-dives showing the context, solution and measurable benefits of RTG deployments.
Each case study helped evidence real-world outcomes and demonstrate the value of remote technologies in high-hazard environments.

Benefits map
A structured map of benefit categories and measures, showing how UAV, ROV and Robotics activities contribute to cost saving, time saving, risk reduction, cost avoidance and time avoidance.
It created a consistent language for explaining impact across different service areas.

Technical paper
HeadinA detailed document explaining the strategic context, benefit capture methodology and role of RTG within Sellafield’s safer, faster and cheaper mission.
It provided the deeper evidence base behind the toolkit.

Infographic
A more visual layer of communication, designed to quickly explain the breadth of RTG activity and guide stakeholders toward the full set of supporting documents.
These pieces acted as accessible entry points into the wider toolkit.

The Impact
The completed toolkit gave RTG a professional and consistent way to communicate its value across Sellafield.
The solution provided:
A clearer story around RTG’s role and strategic importance
A consistent framework for explaining benefits
Stronger evidence for future investment conversations
Easier comparison between UAV, ROV and Robotics activities
A more visual and accessible way to communicate technical information
A structured library of proof points and case studies
A dashboard concept for tracking realised and in-flight benefits
A scalable communication system that can grow with future RTG projects
